BREAST CANCER PREVENTION AND SELF EXAMQuick Facts:
It is recommended that every woman over 20 years old do a self breast exam once per month. It is best done 7-10 days after your period, when all natural tenderness has gone away (just before your period or during pregnancy, your breast may be somewhat lumpy and tender). The best way to treat breast cancer is to find it early, and you can do this simply each month with a Self Breast Exam. Not all lumps are cancer, many can be cysts or calcium deposits, but if you do find a lump, make an appointment with your physician because you won´t know if you don´t ask. Breast ExamUse your right hand to examine your left breast, and your left hand to examine your right breast. You may want to apply oil or lotion to your breast to make it easier for the fingers to glide over the surface and feel changes. Many women do part of their exam in the shower as soapy skin is easier to skim. There are three different methods that you can use for exam. Choose the one that best allows you to feel the tissue and that you are comfortable with. LinesStart in the under arm area and move your fingers downward slowly until they are below the breast. Start again at the top toward the middle and move back down. Repeat this process until you have covered the whole area. CirclesBeginning at the outer edge of your breast, move your fingers around the circumference of your breast. Move in smaller and smaller circles until you reach your nipple. Don´t forget to check the underarm and chest area as well. WedgesStart with the outer edge of your breast, moving your fingers toward the nipple and back to the edge. Check your whole breast covering one small wedge shape at a time. Be sure to check the under arm area and upper chest. Breast ExamStep 1 : Lie down in a comfortable spot with a pillow under your right shoulder. Place your right arm behind your head. Step 2 : Use your finger pads (the sensitive part where your fingerprints are) of the middle three fingers of your hands. Feel for lumps with your chosen method as above. Step 3 : Do each part of your breast three times using light, medium, then hard pressure. Light pressure barely moving the tissue beneath, medium pressure pressing midway into the breast tissue, and finally deep pressure to probe further down to the ribs or to the point just short of discomfort. Step 4 : After you have completely examined your right breast (make sure you go up to the collarbone, to the armpit and extend toward the shoulder) examine your left breast using the same method. Step 5 : In front of a mirror, first with your hands at your sides, then with your arms raised above your head, look carefully for changes in contour, size and shape of each breast. Look for puckering, dimpling or changes in skin texture. Gently squeeze both nipples to look for discharge. Step 6 : (This is the step many people do in the shower). Standing with your arm out to your side, and resting on a firm surface, use the same method (as above) to examine the underarm area. If you notice any indications of breast cancer, see your doctor immediately. The best way to survive breast cancer is to treat it early.Preventative MeasuresNot all breast cancer variables are controllable, however like everything else, living a healthy life style is the best possible way to prevent illness. LifestyleDrink less alcohol, exercise regularly, low fat diet and a lot of vegetables. Currently, studies are being conducted to control the risk of breast cancer through diet, however eating a diet high in fiber and low in fat, with a lot of vegetables is the best course of action. MammographyThis is the single most effective method of early detection, since it can detect hidden or tiny cancers before they can be felt by you or your doctor. Mammography is safe and painless and highly accurate in detecting breast cancer. You need to be vigilant in following all three recommended procedures for breast cancer awareness (Self Breast Exam, Mammography, and Clinical Examinations) as none of the methods are fool proof, due to breast density, fast growth rate, or failure to recognize the small signs of abnormality. Clinical ExaminationA physical breast examination by your physician or health professional, as backed by experience and knowledge he or she may be more likely to notice a subtle change and know the appropriate tests. See your physician without delay if you notice any change or unusual symptoms. Your doctor will be able to determine the best tests and procedures if any. Preventative MastectomyThis is when a woman chooses to have one of both of her breasts removed to reduce her high risk of cancer. There is controversy over how high a risk constitutes performing this surgery. Women who consider a preventative mastectomy usually have an extremely high risk and an overwhelming fear of developing breast cancer that can interfere with their daily life. A woman should speak to her doctor and others before making this decision, it is not one to be made lightly. "Knowledge of your body is the key to good health.
