How to Measure for Bra Fitting (tip of the month)

The enigma of bra measuring is finally solved and offered to the public! Many department stores offer free bra fitting and the staff have been properly trained. However, if you don´t feel like taking your shirt off in front of a total stranger, here´s an easy way you can do it at home.

What you´ll need:

• Mounted mirror (you can do it without a mirror, but this may make it easier)
• Seamstress measuring tape with inches
• Empty room
• No shirt (leave your bra on)

Now, you are in a private room, with only your bra on (pants optional).

Step 1: Take the measuring tape and wrap it around your rib cage, right below your breasts. Pull it tight enough so that you can´t fit a finger under the measuring tape without pulling it away from your body, but not so tight that you are biting into the skin.

Step 2: Take this number (in inches) and add 5. This equals your band size, the number part of a bra size. For example 31 inches will equal to 36 as a band size.

Step 3: Wrap the measuring tape around your bust line. Make sure to measure at the fullest part of your bust, usually so that the tape is covering your nipples. From this number you will determine your cup size.

Step 4: For every number that you are above your original measurement, you add a cup size. For instance if you measured your band size at 31, and your cup measurement was a 33, that means you are a B cup. Therefore in that case, a 32 would be an A, 34 is a C, 35 is a D and so on.

With this in mind, you can successfully measure yourself for a bra. Armed with this knowledge, visit a department or specialty lingerie store and the clerks will be able to help you with the style you feel most comfortable in. All bra companies vary in their make, and some fit a little smaller or bigger then others, so if you don´t quite fit into a style you like from the size you measured, try adding a band size. This can make all the difference.

Also keep in mind, when you go up a band size, the cup is a little bigger as well. Keep trying until you find a brand and style you like. We recommend buying a couple in different colors as companies have a nasty habit of discontinuing your favorite bra.
